SECTION 1: CGSB Manuals // Manuels ONGC

Prepared by the NDT Standards Committees of the Canadian General Standards Board. Published by CGSB/ONGC, Ottawa, Canada. CANMET acts as the certifying agency for NDT in Canada. Its examinations are set in accordance with CGSB certification standards. The five Certification of NDT Personnel manuals contain sample questions and answers (for all three levels in each discipline) that are similar to examination questions set by CANMET. Additionally, these same manuals contain Recommended Reading Lists.

ASTM-E94.04Standard Guide for Radiographic Examination
1.1 This guide covers satisfactory X-ray and gamma-ray radiographic examination as applied to industrial radiographic film recording. It includes statements about preferred practice without discussing the technical background which justifies the preference. A bibliography of several textbooks and standard documents of other societies is included for additional information on the subject.
1.2 This guide covers types of materials to be examined; radiographic examination techniques and production methods; radiographic film selection, processing, viewing, and storage; maintenance of inspection records; and a list of available reference radiograph documents.
Note 1 - Further information is contained in Guide E 999, Practice E 1025, Test Methods E 1030 and E 1032.
1.3 Interpretation and Acceptance Standards - Interpretation and acceptance standards are not covered by this guide, beyond listing the available reference radiograph documents for castings and welds. Designation of accept - reject standards is recognized to be within the cognizance of product specifications and generally a matter of contractual agreement between producer and purchaser.
1.4 Safety Practices - Problems of personnel protection against X rays and gamma rays are not covered by this document. For information on this important aspect of radiography, reference should be made to the current document of the National Committee on Radiation Protection and Measurement, Federal Register, U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration, National Bureau of Standards, and to state and local regulations, if such exist. For specific radiation safety information refer to NIST Handbook ANSI 43.3, 21 CFR 1020.40, and 29 CFR 1910.1096 or state regulations for agreement states.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. (See 1.4.)

REFERENCE RADIOGRAPHS from ASTM
ASTM-RRE0505Adjunct to E505 Reference Radiographs for Inspection of Aluminum and Magnesium Die Castings.
Reference Radiographs are nondestructive testing standards universally accepted because of their high reliability in accept-reject actions.
These reference radiographs illustrate the categories and severity levels of discontinuities that may occur in aluminum-alloy and magnesium-alloy die castings. They are intended to provide:
--A guide enabling recognition of discontinuities and their differentiation both as to type and severity level through radiographic examination.
--Example radiographic illustrations of discontinuities and a nomenclature for reference in acceptance standards, specifications, and drawings.
The set of reference radiographs consists of five 8-1/2 by 11 in. cardboard frames containing radiographs covering discontinuities in aluminum and magnesium alloy die-castings. The first four frames each contain two sets of four graded levels of increasing severity, while the last frame contains two ungraded radiographs. The five frames are contained in a 10-1/2 by 11-1/2 in. ring binder.

--RRE015501 --(Volume I): The set of reference radiographs consists of 13 plates covering discontinuities in aluminum-alloy castings and 10 plates covering discontinuities in magnesium-alloy castings. Each plate is held in an 8-1/2 by 11-in. ( 216 by 279-mm) cardboard frame and each plate illustrates eight grades of severity for the discontinuity in approximately a 2 by 2-in. ( 51 by 51-mm) area. The cardboard frames are contained in a 10-1/2 by 11-1/2 in. ( 267 by 292-mm) ring binder.

AUTHOR:Frederic P. Miller
Product Description:
An eddy current (also known as Foucault current) is an electrical phenomenon discovered by French physicist François Arago in 1824. It is caused when a conductor is exposed to a changing magnetic field due to relative motion of the field source and conductor; or due to variations of the field with time. This can cause a circulating flow of electrons, or a current, within the body of the conductor. These circulating eddies of current create induced magnetic fields that oppose the change of the original magnetic field due to Lenz's law, causing repulsive or drag forces between the conductor and the magnet. The stronger the applied magnetic field, or the greater the electrical conductivity of the conductor, or the faster the field that the conductor is exposed to changes, then the greater the currents that are developed and the greater the opposing field. The term eddy current comes from analogous currents seen in water when dragging an oar breadthwise: localised areas of turbulence known as eddies give rise to persistent vortices.Eddy currents, like all electric currents, generate heat as well as electromagnetic forces.

REFERENCE
ASNT-1186Basic Metallurgy for NDT, Editor: J.L. Taylor, BINDT, 4th edition, 1988, 87 pages.
These days we describe the stuff of engineering as materials of which metals and alloys form a part. Whilst it is certainly true that materials such as fibre-reinforced plastics and ceramics have opened new and exciting horizons, nevertheless metals, and particularly steels, continue to provide much of the raw material of industry when usefulness and cost are considered together. Thus, a basic understanding of metals and alloys continues to be relevant to understanding the formation and type of defects and the metallurgical problems which non-destructive testing engineers must consider in the practice of their technology. This revised edition contains improvements to the original text which was derived from a series of articles published in The British Journal of Non- Destructive Testing. The work provides a basic understanding of metallurgy for the NDT practitioner. More than 150 pictures and diagrams. Comprehensive index.

This Handbook has been produced by the Working Group Ultrasonic Testing of Austenitic Welds of the MW-Commission VC Ultrasonics. It is based on the Handbook on the Ultrasonic Examination of Welds (for carbon steel welds). Publications, practical experience, and available codes on ultrasonic examination of austenitic welds have been taken into account during preparation. The Handbook is intended to serve as a guideline for the preparation of procedures for specific applications but is not intended to provide a detailed inspection procedure for any particular weld. Advice is given on how to devise procedures to take proper account of access available to the weld and of surface preparation. Methods are defined to ensure reproducible sensitivity setting for the ultrasonic examination and to provide a means of judging the test result. Specific problems such as the effects of grain structure and spurious indications, and the application of special probes are mentioned.

AWS-D17.1SPECIFICATION FOR FUSION WELDING FOR AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS (2001)
This revolutionary document represents the most significant change to aviation welding standards in more than 30 years, including coverage in three areas never addressed in MILSTDs design, repair, and nonflight hardware. And, for the first time, there are authoritative procedures for weld repair of inservice existing aerospace flight hardware. In fact, the standards use of weld repair technology enables weld overhaul beyond the areas originally designated for a weld. Bolstering the excellent coverage on inspection is information to avoid both under and overinspection, arising from the D17 Committees position that, Choosing acceptance criteria beyond the capability of the welding process may lead to numerous inspection rejections, increasing costs. To help, tables on acceptance criteria one in U.S. Customary units, the other in SI units provide distinctions for Class A, B, and C welds. Also includes an annex offering Guidelines for Design, Analysis, and Fabrication of Weld Joints. D17.12001 emphasizes fusion welding of aluminumbased, nickelbased, ironbased, cobaltbased, magnesiumbased, and titaniumbased alloys using electric arc and high energy beam processes. SI metric equivalents provided. ANSI Approved. ISBN 0-87171-646-1
