New Technology Developed by Berkeley Scientists at 4D Imaging to Prevent Pipeline Explosions Failures like PG&E San Bruno Incident Originally Posted: Tue, May 8th 2012 at 2:25 AM |
New System Uses MRI Medical Technology to Monitor Pipeline Safety
A group of Berkeley physicists and engineers have developed a new safety system to monitor and prevent pipeline ruptures by using MRI (magnetic-resonance imaging) medical technology to remotely monitor the structural integrity of metal pipelines.
The new technology would help prevent failures such as the PG&E pipeline incident in San Bruno as well as other leaks, explosions and disruptions, according to the scientists at 4D Imaging, Inc., the Berkeley company which invented and patented the MRI-based pipeline monitoring system. The system transmits the status of a pipeline to the internet and gives pipeline operators a real-time picture of the health of the pipeline, checking for fractures at welds or support systems and corrosion failure.
"We are excited to present this new technology," says Dr. Glen Stevick, president and co-founder of 4D Imaging. "Our systems will lead the way to safer and more dependable pipeline operations for industry and the public." Stevick's team includes emeritus UC-Berkeley physicist Professor Jerome R. Singer, the co-inventor of MRI, used in hospital radiological departments.
After installation of the MRI monitoring system, the status of the pipeline can be visualized via the internet. The monitoring is constant, and any change in the mechanical health of the pipeline is measured and transmitted immediately to operating officers and pipeline managers. "As you can imagine, glancing at a computer screen to monitor pipeline safety beats the pants off of digging up miles of pipeline as a method of monitoring," Stevick said.

Taiwan chooses Phoenix system for PWR inspections Originally Posted: Fri, Aug 26th 2011 at 3:01 AM |
Phoenix Inspection Systems has supplied a scanning system to Taiwan for testing the integrity of welds at nuclear power plants. The MAXI-SAGE scanner has been supplied to the inspection company Taiwan Metal Quality Control (TMQC) through distributors Almatec and has already been used for testing primary circuit outlet nozzles on a reactor pressure vessel in Taiwan. TMQC have subsequently commissioned Phoenix to supply additional modules to extend its use to the inspection of primary circuit inlet nozzles, as well as inlet and outlet nozzles on the steam generator. Phoenix offers one of the largest ranges of nuclear inspection systems on the market. The MAXI-SAGE was designed specifically to inspect the critical mixed material transition welds on the primary circuit of pressurised water reactors. Neil Hankinson, project manager at Phoenix, said: “Phoenix’s nuclear inspection scanners have a proven track record within the industry and continue to be popular with operators around the world. “The MAXI-SAGE scanner supplied to TMQC incorporated a number of updated features. These included lightening the scanner for ease of handling when transporting it to and from the inspection site, and quick release systems to minimise the time operators spent within radioactive areas assembling and removing the scanner. “TMQC have qualified and undertaken one outage inspection using the MAXI-SAGE and we are pleased they want to extend its use to other areas beyond those originally planned. The modular design means that this can be achieved by substituting a minimum number of components. This modularity makes the MAXI-SAGE one of the most cost-effective systems of its type on the market.” |
OLYMPUS NDT introduced the new ERW Tube Inspection System Originally Posted: Fri, Aug 26th 2011 at 3:01 AM |
Olympus is pleased to introduce its latest ultrasonic industrial NDT system, the In-Line ERW Tube Inspection System. This new inspection system uses advanced phased array technology to inspect weld seams and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of electrical resistance welded (ERW) tubes.
The main advantage of this innovative system is that it performs ERW tube inspections using advanced phased array technology in place of the conventional ultrasound technology currently available on the market. Phased array offers broad sector coverage of the HAZ while maintaining constant amplitude. This unique solution provides constant amplitude detection within the entire inspection area, even when there is significant weld seam movement relative to the probes. In addition, PA technology permits electronic optimization of the beam shape in order to enhance the detection of small defects such as penetrators.
The Olympus ERW Tube Inspection System is capable of inspecting pipes with diameters ranging from 60 mm (2.375 in.) to 245 mm (9.625 in.) and wall thicknesses ranging from 2 mm (0.079 in.) to 16 mm (0.630 in.). The system also has a maximum inspection speed of 1.5 m/s (295 ft/min).
The Olympus mechanical solution for ERW tube inspection is based on a small automated bridge (gantry type) that positions the inspection head in-line or off-line when performing inspections, automatic calibrations, calibration checks, and maintenance operations.
While the system's main function is to detect longitudinal flaws using a cylindrical phased array probe located on each side of the weld, a third cylindrical phased array probe located on top of the weld and firing at 0 degrees may be used for weld profiling to create a true side view of the weld for simple and fast profile analysis.
This third PA probe and a unique patented algorithm based on time-of-flight analysis enable the Olympus system to perform automatic detection of the scarfing area and send feedback to the PLC (programmable logic controller) for automatic adjustment of the position of each inspection head.
Olympus is confident that this new In-Line ERW Tube Inspection system equipped with advanced and innovative features will improve the overall quality of ERW tube inspection.

BRACELET is ideal solution for small-bore pipe inspection Originally Posted: Wed, Jul 13th 2011 at 4:05 PM |
A new pipe scanner specially designed for phased array inspection has been produced by Phoenix Inspection Systems. The BRACELET is a low-profile manual scanner which can be used on pipe diameters ranging from 0.5” to 4” nominal pipe size and can operate in areas of limited access with an envelope of just 0.5”. The BRACELET is designed to be sure-footed, practical and easy to use. It fits securely to the pipe by means of the bracelet mechanism. Together with the rubber wheels, this provides a sure grip to prevent the scanner slipping during a scan whilst the integrated miniature, splash proof encoder, running on the surface of the pipe, provides positional feedback to the instrumentation. The BRACELET can operate either with a single phased array probe for pipe-to-fitting inspections or, with the extended bracket, can be configured for dual-sided inspections. It is compatible with industry standard small bore phased array probes and flaw detectors. Andrew Brewis of Phoenix Inspection Systems said: “The BRACELET is the ultimate solution for scanning small-bore pipework. It is lightweight, swift and easy to operate but at the same time is designed to be sure-footed and provide accurate, reliable data. It is ideal for any phased array inspection, particularly on banks of pipes where the presence of obstructions calls for a device that can operate with minimal clearance.” For further information see <http://www.phoenixisl.co.uk> |

Cokebusters makes clean sweep with new inspection pig Originally Posted: Wed, Jul 13th 2011 at 4:03 PM |
A new inspection pig designed to test the inside of oil refinery furnace tubes a fter cleaning has been developed by Phoenix Inspection Systems for the pipeline cleaning company Cokebusters. The development represents a significant upgrade to Cokebusters’ previous inspection technology, including dramatic advances in battery power, ultrasonic accuracy, storage capacity and overall reliability. It makes Cokebusters the only company in the world which can offer cleaning and accurate follow-up inspections as part of the same operation. Cokebusters, which serves the North American market from its base in Houston, Texas, provides furnace tube and pipeline cleaning services for oil refineries around the world. Refinery process tubes require regular cleaning as carbon or coke deposits build up on the tube walls. Scraper pigs are the most effective way to remove this build-up. The pigs are forced through the network of furnace tubes by pressurised water, and the coke which is removed is filtered out and removed for safe disposal. Once decoking is complete, ultrasonic inspection can be used to check the tube wall thickness and success of the cleaning operation. This latest development means that Cokebusters can carry out inspections as part of the whole operation by replacing the scraper pig with the inspection pig, a 16-channel flaw detector incorporating probes and instrumentation in one compact package. It can operate independently without an umbilical and log data which can then be uploaded once the inspection is complete. The pig is designed for small diameter tubing in the range of 4” to 8”.

June 29, 2010 Olympus Introduces a Semi-Automated Corrosion Mapping Solution Utilizing the Hydroform Phased Array Probe Immersion Box
Olympus NDT is pleased to introduce the first semi-automated (semi-AUT) ultrasound phased array solution developed for corrosion mapping applications. This portable inspection solution comprises several components including the OmniScan MX PA flaw detector, OmniScan MXU software with corrosion mapping functionality, and the HydroFORM Phased Array Probe Carrier with a Mini-Wheel encoder. The new HydroFORM solution improves inspection quality, operator safety, mechanical dependability, and productivity in the nondestructive testing (NDT) of metal plates, pipes, and welded components for detection of internal corrosion, mid-wall anomalies, and environmentally damaged mechanisms.

The HydroFORM is an innovative carrier for phased array (PA) probes that cover an area up to 60 mm wide (2.36 in.) at a speed up to 100 mm/s (3.93 in/s) with data increment size of 1 mm x 1 mm (.039" x .039") in the scan and index direction. The HydroFORM probe carrier fits a broad range of curvatures and diameters without the need to use any wedges. It is water-coupled to the inspection surface with a special gasket that minimizes water consumption and provides excellent surface conformance for OD and ID applications. It can be outfitted with magnetic or rubber wheels. The HydroFORM can be used independently or in unison with the optional Olympus CHAIN Scanner. Both portable solutions can be applied to pipe ODs from 100 mm (4 in.) and up, flat surfaces, and complex geometries such as spherical or elliptical pressure vessel heads
The HydroFORM and OmniScan combination provides unparalleled corrosion detection and characterization in a compact, light weight, battery operated package. January 29, 2010 - By performing contactless 3D measurement of internal and external part surfaces, exaCT® allows non-destructive inspection of small and medium sized complex parts with small features manufactured from plastics, composites, ceramics, aluminum, or magnesium. Integrated system includes CT scanning machine with image detectors, 2 monitors, and computer. Also included, master system software enables acquisition of projections and reconstruction for evaluation of generated 3D data.
This new inspection product provides contactless 3D measurements of internal and external part surfaces allowing non-destructive and timesaving inspection of small and medium sized complex parts.
Wenzel GmbH recently introduced at the Control Show in Germany a new Integrated Computed Tomography Workstation call exaCT®. This new product was developed by the Wenzel Group Company Wenzel Volumetrik headed by Dr. Martin Simon a renowned expert in the field of Computer Tomography. The new inspection machine, Fig. 1, allows the contactless 3D measurement of internal and external part surfaces allowing non-destructive and timesaving inspection of small and medium sized complex parts with small features manufactured from plastics, composites, ceramics, aluminum or magnesium.
Computed Tomography is an imaging method originally developed for the medical industry where digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of the internals of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. In operation, an X-ray tube produces a conic beam of electrons that penetrate the object to be measured and a digital signal is interpreted by the 2D detector as a digital radiograph image. The object is positioned on a precision rotational stage and an image is acquired during the rotation at a constant speed. The output of a Computed Tomography reconstruction is referred to as a 3D voxel (three-dimensional pixel) model and the resolution of each voxel depend on the resolution of each projection and the number of projections. From this 3D volume, CT software is able to export a stack of CT slices in any direction, analyze relative density with colored map and will ultimately create a point cloud/triangle model compatible with CAD or Rapid Prototyping software. The main benefit of using 3D CT for scanning or digitization is that a complete model with both external and internal surfaces of an object can be obtained without destroying the part. In addition, CT can be performed on any surface, shape, color or material with densities or thicknesses that are penetrable with X-rays.

Fast and Reliable Testing Method Decreases Brake Part Noise and Increases Consumer Confidence
Normally occurring brake noise causes millions of dollars in unnecessary warranty repairs each year. THE MODAL SHOP, INC. helps solve this problem for many brake part manufacturers with its Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) testing system for use in production.
This nondestructive system tests calipers, anchors and disks using the Resonant Acoustic Method (NDT-RAMTM). By measuring, reporting, and archiving natural frequencies of brake components, it ensures NVH requirements are met on every piece. NDT-RAM works by impacting a brake component with a controlled, repeatable force and measuring the frequency response via an industrial microphone. With throughput rates of roughly one part per second, 100% quality inspection is easily attainable.
In addition to decreased part noise and increased manufacturing consistency, the test system features automated software reporting. This allows for part-specific information to be automatically or manually input on a per part basis. Pertinent information such as serial number, model number, lot data, weight and more can be entered. The NDT-RAM method provides 100% resonant inspection with no chemicals, magnetizing, part preparation or special handling required, plus NVH data is collected right in the production environment.

The COBRA is used with the OmniScan® MX Phased Array flaw detector with the 16:128 module and the OmniScan MXU software, to provide an economical and portable weld inspection solution.

In addition to its capability of inspecting small diameter pipes, the COBRA one-axis scanner has a very low vertical profile, which allows it to be used in areas with minimal clearance. The total height of the scanner and the probes allow easy rotation around the pipe even when adjacent obstructions such as other pipes, supports, and structures are as close as 12 mm (0.5 in.). The COBRA is spring-loaded and designed to clamp onto carbon steel and stainless steel pipes of various diameters. It is characterized by its smooth-rolling encoded movement enabling precise data acquisition. The scanner can hold two low-profile phased array probes for a complete inspection of the weld in one pass. For pipe-to-component inspections, the scanner can be quickly configured to make one-sided inspections with only one probe. The phased array probes offer optimized elevation focusing, which improves detection of small defects in thin-walled pipes.
The COBRA scanner ensures stable, constant, and strong pressure thus providing good UT signals and precise encoding around the full circumference of the pipe. The scanner is also waterproof, rustproof, and CE compliant.

Carestream Health’s KODAK Industrex Products division, a global leader in the development and manufacturing of Non-Destructive Testing systems and software, is one of the world’s largest providers of industrial digital radiographic inspection systems. KODAK Industrex is pleased to announce that Brazilian energy company, Petrobras has completed a process of qualification and validation for weld inspection that favorably supports digital computed radiography (CR) systems for the inspection of steel pipes up to 3.5- inch (89mm).

“Recent developments in CR technology have improved quality to the point that CR systems like the KODAK Industrex ACR-2000i, and the recently launched KODAK Industrex HPX-1, produce images that can be considered equal to, if not better than, conventional X-ray says Luiz Castro, Latin American Sales Manager for Kodak Industrex Products. “A local NDT service company, ArcTest worked with Petrobas to show that the ACR-2000i is both powerful and very capable of delivering exceptionally high quality images for inspection.”
The KODAK Industrex ACR-2000i system is particularly efficient in terms of radiation absorption and extraction of latent images from phosphor plates. This combined with the ACR-2000i’s ability to display high visual contrast (contrast to noise ratio) helped Petrobas to complete their study and qualify the largest range of pipe thickness and diameters. Petrobras collaborated with service inspection company ArcTest and ArcTest recently signed an agreement to use the KODAK Industrex ACR-2000i CR system for inspecting welds for Petrobras refineries. It is the first contract to inspect welding using computed radiology in a Petrobras plant.

Switzerland-based Proceq Launches PaperSchmidt Roll Hardness Tester Originally Posted: Wed, Jul 13th 2011 at 4:03 PM |
Schwerzenbach / Switzerland, October 29, 2009 -- Proceq announces the launch of the new PaperSchmidt, continuing the company’s tradition of bringing high quality, innovative products to the market. The PaperSchmidt is the first rebound hammer designed specifically for paper roll hardness testing. Extensive field tests carried out at major manufacturers and converters in the US and Europe have consistently shown that it provides previously unachievable roll-profiling accuracy and repeatability.
The instrument is fully compliant with the TAPPI T834 om-07 standard used in North America to regulate roll hardness testing and it delivers instantly all of the key parameters required for assessing the quality of paper rolls.
"Proceq has collected feedback over many years from existing customers worldwide and on dedicated site surveys. They all identified the same issues: Repeatability of results, quick access to key parameters, documentation of data, durability of the instrument, easy maintenance. The PaperSchmidt was designed to meet all of these requirements. Not only has it successfully done that, it has even managed to exceed our expectations," said David Corbett, Product Manager of Proceq.

October 1, 2009 PRESS RELEASE (Waltham, MA)
Olympus is pleased to announce the introduction of the new IPLEX LX and IPLEX LT industrial videoscopes. These new small and lightweight videoscopes, which are used for a wide range of remote visual inspections of parts or structures where access is limited, offer portability, ease of use, durability, and a host of practical features.
The IPLEX LX and LT are the most compact and lightweight of the IPLEX systems. They are one-third the size and approximately half the weight (2.7 kg, including battery) of the IPLEX FX, the most recent Olympus videoscope introduced. The reason for this small size is that the LCD monitor is built into a main operating unit that is just 64 mm width (2.5 in.) excluding the handle. The LCD monitor uses a large 6.5-inch screen with low ambient reflection, permitting accurate inspection even outdoors in direct sunlight. The size and weight makes the new IPLEX units ideal for applications where operator access is limited, such as inside boiler rooms, airplane fuselages, or wind turbine gear boxes.
