MISSISSAUGA: July 19, 2019 - Candu Energy Inc., a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, was awarded $36 million worth of contracts from Bruce Power in 2019 from January 1 to April 31 to support Bruce Power’s operational objectives. This includes initiatives that will reduce maintenance outage duration and increase output from the Unit 4 reactor. The work was awarded under a Master Services Agreement signed in 2016 and is in addition to work announced previously.

The award includes continued support of the Bruce Reactor Inspection and Maintenance System (BRIMS) program with the maintance and operation of the Advanced NonDestructive Examination (ANDE)/replication maintenance tool and the Modal Detection And Repositioning (MODAR) tool for fuel channel spacer repositioning.  The BRIMS work is about time-saving innovations that will contribute to the common goal of reducing the outage duration.

“Employees at SNC-Lavalin continue to explore and introduce innovation to Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program that provides efficiencies and value to the job,” said Bill Fox, Executive Vice-President, Nuclear at SNC-Lavalin. “We remain committed to making investments to grow our team and explore new technologies to support ongoing plant operations as well as the Major Component Replacement Project.”

The awards also include a new initiative to deploy SNC-Lavalin’s CANDUclean™ System to remove the oxide deposits from all accessible U-tubes in each of the preheaters in Unit 4 to improve output. This latest application of the CANDUclean™ technology is the result of a collaborative effort between Bruce Power and SNC-Lavalin.
“Increasing our output and operating the Bruce Power site to 2064 by innovating and extending the life of our units will create and sustain 22,000 direct and indirect jobs annually, while injecting $4 billion into Ontario’s economy each year for decades,” said Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power’s President and CEO. “By working together with our partners to find efficiencies we will continue to power more for less in support of Ontario families and businesses.”

Since the early 1990’s, the CANDUclean™ system has been successfully deployed at CANDU® nuclear power plants worldwide to remove magnetite deposits from inside the steam generator tubes.  The current technology evolved through modifications implemented out of operating experience and lessons learned from past efforts. This has resulted in a mature system with a history of successfully increasing heat exchanger flows, reducing reactor inlet header temperatures, improving the ability to inspect steam generator tubes and reducing maintenance operator radiation fields.
