Ontario Chapter Event - Technical Presentation (Understanding Why it Cracked: On-Site, NDT Crack Identification) April 16, 2020

Understanding Why it Cracked
On-Site, NDT Crack Identification
Understanding the nature of failure or cracking can help direct efforts in preventing repeat failures.  When broken parts can be removed, lab-based failure analysis can be used to determine the details of part failure.  Yet in many cases, such as when cracks are found on pressure vessels, destructive testing is not a viable option.  Field replications and metallography allows for on-site, non-destructive identification of the cracking mode.  This talk will summarize the uses of both failure analysis and on-site evaluation in support of inspection efforts.
Speaker: Shane Turcott (Steel Image)
Biography – Shane Turcott
Shane Turcott, P.Eng has performed over 2500 failure analyzes and metallurgical projects.  He has worked for various companies including Dofasco, Bodycote and Liburdi Turbine Services.  In 2009 he founded Steel Image, an engineering company specializing in failure analysis and on-site material evaluations.  Considered an expert in these fields, he has worked around the world supporting refining, mining, energy and manufacturing.  He is the past Ontario Chair of the American Society of Materials, somewhat funny, has been decorated by McMaster University and once completed a 100 mile running race.
